Apply for 2013 SWE Planning Board!

If you have any questions regarding the various positions, we will be hosting a welcome event with a casual Q&A on Monday, February 4 at 6-7pm in 5-234.

Are you interested in getting involved with SWE? Do you want to develop your leadership abilities and have fun? Do you like teaching students about math and science? Do you want to get involved with professional development and networking? Do you want to throw study breaks and plan social events? Do you have interest in where women stand in the world beyond MIT?
Apply to join the 2013 MIT SWE Planning Board! Descriptions of the available 2013 board can be found here.

Anyone is welcome to apply to join our board.Please note: to apply to join the SWE Board, you must be a National member of SWE. Not a member but want to apply? You can register as a National Member (membership tab, join swe) today! Registration costs $20 per year or $50 for a 5 year Collegiate to Career registration (recommended for freshmen and sophomores). Just make sure to register for the MIT (F059) section and use your MIT email address. You MUST also notify MIT SWE of your new membership using this form or you will not be added to the members email list! Please forward your membership confirmation to swe-vp-membership@mit.edu and swe-treasurer@mit.edu to ensure you will be reimbursed.

To apply for board, please fill out the form by 11:59pm on Tuesday, February 5. In addition, please email a website worthy photo of yourself to swe-president@mit.edu.  Interviews for positions will be held on Thursday, February 7th or Saturday the 9th.
All Board Members are required to complete 3 hours of volunteering at Outreach events and attend 3 events outside of those that they have planned. In addition, attendance to the Board Retreat Saturday, February 16 (all day) is required along with 4 board meetings scheduled this semester.

SWE Holiday Party

CONGRATULATIONS!
Happy end of the semester! To mark the end of a great year in SWE, we held a holidy party during which internal awards, scholarships, and the new FY13 Exec board was announced. See below for pictures and award winners. =)

MIT SWE Scholarship Winners:
The MIT SWE scholarships are awarded to leaders in the organization and promising freshmen who exhibit the qualities that the Society represents. This year we had a larger number of applicants from which our dedicated alumni selected four outstanding individuals. Two freshmen and two upperclassmen will receive $1000 and $500 for first and second place, respectively, to use towards their achieving their aspirations.

MIT SWE Interal Awards
In order to recognize the great work of the planning board and exec, people were asked to nominate individuals who were outstanding this past year.

MIT SWE Lifetime Achievement Award: Liza Xu
The MIT SWE Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a junior or senior who embodies the spirit of SWE, and who has continuously contributed to the advancement of the section with their leadership and vision throughout their time at MIT.

Outstanding New Board Member Award: Dacie Manion
The Outstanding New Board Member Award is presented to a new board member who took initiative upon joining the section and excelled at their position. 

MIT SWE Future Leader Award: Nitya Subramanian
The MIT SWE Future Leader Award is presented to a freshman or sophomore who has distinguished themselves early on with their talent, dedication, and leadership.  This individual shows great promise to become a future leader of the MIT SWE section.

Outreach Achievement Award: Jean Xin
Outreach is one of the defining values of the Society, and is the most expansive section within MIT SWE.  This award is presented to a board member who showed excellence in their work with outreach.

Most Active Member Award: Anika Gupta
The Most Active Member Award is presented to a member who has risen above the requirements of their position by attending and contributing to many of the activities throughout the MIT Section.

Exec Choice Outstanding Board Member Award: Jenny Shen
The Exec Choice Outstanding Board Member Award is presented to a member who the Exec Board wishes to recognize in particular. This individual has not only excelled in her position, but has also inspired those around her and shows great promise to continue in MIT SWE as a leader.

All national members are invited to vote, though MIT certificates are required. Please visit the ballot page to read the platforms of the candidates.

Voting will close on Wednesday, December 12 at 11:59pm.

MIT SWE 2012 Scholarships now open!

All members are welcome to apply to the scholarships that MIT SWE is providing. This year, we will be offering two $1000 and two $500 scholarships, first place and second place, to two lucky freshmen and two upperclassmen. Scholarship applications will be reviewed by our very own SWE alumni.
Application Process: Please respond to the respective short essay questions and provide a copy of your resume. The combined length of the responses may be a maximum of 3 pages, double spaced. Files must be titled "lastname_firstinitial_resume" or "lastname_firstinitial_essays" and submitted as pdfs.
Freshmen: (1) How do you embody the values held by SWE? Please provide tangible examples if applicable. (2) Where do you see yourself applying these values to your next three years at MIT? (You can read about the Society's values at swe.org)
Upperclassmen: (1) How have you contributed to SWE and how has the organization shaped you personally? (2) Describe the most defining moments/memories of your time in SWE thus far. (3) How do you plan on contributing to SWE and upholding the Society's values in the future.

Photo Collage 2012

Hi everyone!

This is Liza speaking. I have been president of the MIT SWE section since January and it has really been amazing so far. Everyone in the organization is great and I wanted to just give a shout out to some noteworthy individuals from MIT who were rewarded scholarships from the the Society. Additionally, I put together a photo collage of some of the great memories we have been able to collect so far. 

I hope to be able to meet you all at our upcoming events!
